DAY ONE. Queenstown to Franz Josef - 4 hours 30 mins driving
From Queenstown we will drive you over the Haast Pass through mountain beech forest to the wild West Coast. You can take a guided walking tour of the glacier, or by helicopter have a bird’s eye view of the glaciers and spectacular Mt Cook. Stay Franz Josef.
DAY TWO. Franz Josef to Hokitika - 1 hour 45 mins driving
On our way up the coast, there will be time for a stop at Lake Matheson, a bushwalk or two and a visit to the white heron colony at Okarito if that appeals. There will also be the opportunity to pan for gold, visit mining sites or discover the local greenstone artistry. Stay Hokitika.
DAY THREE. Hokitika to Christchurch - 3 hours 30 mins driving
From Hokitika you may choose to travel by the trans alpine train to Christchurch or otherwise be driven over the viaduct, through the magnificent Southern Alps via Otira and Arthurs Pass followed by a stop at Castle Hill to see the filming site of part of the Lord of the Rings movie. DAY FOUR. Christchurch to Dunedin - 4 hours 30 mins driving
A quick look around earthquake ravaged and partly rebuilt Christchurch and then south to Dunedin. A stop for a meal at the famous restaurant, Fleurs Place, at Moeraki (famous for its round boulders) is recommended. Stay Dunedin.
DAY FIVE. Dunedin to Invercargill via the Catlins - 3 hours 30 mins driving
If castles are your thing a look around New Zealand’s Larnach Castle in Dunedin is a must, then on the road towards Invercargill, travelling the scenic coastal route through the Catlins. Seals, penguins, the “nuggets” and lighthouse at Nugget Point and the petrified forest at Curio Bay are all part of the attraction of this drive. Stay Invercargill.
DAY SIX. Day Trip to Stewart Island, fly (20 mins), or ferry (approx. 1 hour) each way
Arrive on the island and you will be transported into a different world where the pace of life matches that of the sea and the tides. Bird life abounds, while nature walks, fishing, diving are all on offer. Stay Invercargill.
DAY SEVEN. Invercargill to Milford Sound and back to Te Anau - 5 hours 30 mins driving
From the far south of New Zealand you will now head north through some of the most productive farmland in the country to Te Anau. Then it’s through the awesome Homer Tunnel and on to Milford Sound for a cruise in this most magnificent fiord and then back to Te Anau to stay overnight.
DAY EIGHT. Te Anau to Queenstown - 2 hours driving
A stay in Te Anau would not be complete without a visit to the glowworm caves on the western shores of Lake Te Anau. Then it will be time to head back to Queenstown heading north along the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Stay Queenstown.
