DAY ONE. Christchurch to Hokitika – 3 hours 30 mins driving
From Christchurch we head inland through the intensive farmland of the Canterbury plains, into the high country, possibly calling in at Castle Hill where some of the Lord of the Rings was filmed, and then on into the spectacular Southern Alps. There are many opportunities for bush walks and photo stops; suggest lunch in Otira and then over the viaduct and onto the West Coast. Stay Hokitika.
DAY TWO. Hokitika to Nelson - 4 hours 30 mins driving
Bush walks in the unique New Zealand rain forest to waterfalls, gorges, and lakes abound, as does the opportunity to pan for gold, visit old mining sites or just soak up the scenery from a café. A visit to the famous Pancake Rocks and blow holes at Punakaiki is a must. and then it’s north up the road to Nelson. Stay Nelson
DAY THREE. Nelson to Blenheim - 2 hours driving
Nelson is famous for its beautiful beaches and is the gateway to the Abel Tasman National Park. Boating, fishing, kayaking, paddle boarding and swimming are all on offer. Many artists make their home in this area so if arts and crafts are for you the choice is many and varied. On to Blenheim for the night.
DAY FOUR. Blenheim
Time to catch your breath. Blenheim has some of the best vineyards in the country; checking out some of these wineries to sample both the wines and the local produce is recommended. Stay Blenheim.
DAY FIVE. Blenheim to Hanmer Springs– 5 hours driving
There are several options for the drive south to Hanmer Springs depending on the season – via Lewis Pass, through the iconic Molesworth Station or on the coastal road past Kaikoura. Hanmer Springs is a thermal spring resort so upon arrival a soak in the natural hot water beckons. Stay Hanmer.
DAY SIX. Hanmer Springs to Christchurch – 2 hours driving
South through farmland, and back to Christchurch driving through the Weka Pass and the Waipara wine estates to Christchurch. Upon arrival there may be the opportunity to do an earthquake tour of the city before settling in for the night. Stay Christchurch.
DAY SEVEN. Christchurch to Akaroa return – 1 hour 30 mins driving each way
Akaroa is a small French flavoured village in the Akaroa Harbour just over the hill from Christchurch. Weather permitting a harbour cruise should ensure close up encounters of one of the worlds smallest dolphins, the Hector Dolphin. And on the way there is the opportunity to see sheepdogs working sheep on the hill. Stay Christchurch.
